The Pond is an explosion of ideas augmenting vintage beats, 60’s pop, Eastern flavoured loops - and even a rapper. The music developed – alongside friendships - over a two year period of on/ off recording at Simon & Ginny’s home studio in North London and by exchanging files over email with Newcastle-based Kathryn. Pooling their talents into The Pond’s eponymous debut, the album’s 11 tunes are infused with the warmth and playfulness of its makers – with Adrian Utley’s mix giving the ultra-vivid melodies a depth and surprisingly louché sophistication.

“From working closely with Simon on my last three releases, it was natural to mess about in the studio in downtime,” says Kathryn. “We had no plans or ideas of forming a band, we were just having fun and experimenting with sounds and ideas. Slowly the sound came together and we were able to hear what was ‘The Pond’ and what wasn't. It's been very democratic and honest. Being able to share the responsibility and the joy of a record is great. Plus being able to say I'm in a band sounds cool.”

The project naturally lends itself to the remix treatment – look out for versions by experimental film soundtrack composer Biggi Hillmars (‘Art Of Doing Nothing’), Marky Bates (‘Memory Let Down’, ‘Circle Round A Tree) and Andy Jenks (‘Carved’).

A quick heads up on Kathryn’s co-conspirators. Simon – a much in demand session player - cut his teeth in Fairground Attraction scoring a worldwide hit with Perfect in 1988, the song winning the Best Single award at the following year’s BRITS (the parent album, The First of a Million Kisses also picking up the Best Album gong). Ginny meanwhile started out in her pop life as one half of The Dear Janes, subsequently contributing vocals to records by everyone from Robert Plant to Robyn Hitchcock.

Kathryn Williams is a Mercury Prize Nominated artist.

That's what it says every time she makes an album. Which suits her fine, but it was a long time ago.

Kathryn has been putting out records since 1999, and cleverly avoiding mainstream success, preferring poverty and happiness over riches and happiness.

Simon Edwards is a bass legend, but would never say so himself, as he's far too modest.

Having played with Billy Bragg, Beth Gibbons and as a founding member of Fairground Attraction he has garnered awards and praise as well as making good porridge.

Ginny Clee is a woman in her own right as well as being Simon’s wife. She was once signed to Geffen records with her band The Dear Janes, and toured America with Robyn Hitchcock. She has sung on so many great records We won’t bore you with a list. She is the preferred singer for top producer Phil Brown.

Kathryn met Simon while recording the debut Kathryn Williams/ Neil McColl album. Before then Kathryn had not toured extensively, her stage fright and panic attacks often held her back.

But well, it only took her 12 years to realize she loves singing and performing. She will be back on stage when The Pond will tour in May 2012.

Gin and Simon are her home in London. They took her swimming in a cold brown pond with stories of ducks and dead bodies.

They became a band, a democratic mud pit.

The three of them wrote and recorded this album together as The Pond. Then they got Adrian Utley to sprinkle some magic dust over it.

It will surprise quite a few people.

But they all agree Simon makes the best porridge.
